What is White Whiskey?
Blackfish White Whiskey is our bourbon before the barrel. This is a complex corn whiskey that’s tasty enough to drink straight or in a cocktail.
Originally made for customers to age their own at home, white whiskey is the product that goes into barrels to make Blackfish Bourbon. If you are interested in aging at home, the cooperage that makes our barrels, The Barrel Mill, has home-aging solutions.
What Makes a White Whiskey White?
Every whiskey starts out clear, or what we call white. Once a whiskey is placed in a barrel, it starts to absorb the colors and flavors of the wood. Over time the whiskey can turn anywhere from a pale yellow to a deep amber color depending on the time spent in the barrel, and the amount the barrel is charred.
As it hasn’t been in a barrel, white whiskey has only the flavors of the grain, with none of the caramel and vanilla flavors that a barrel adds. Our mixture of corn, barley, rye and chocolate rye give Blackfish White Whiskey a sweet flavor, with a hint of pepper and a chocolatey finish. The high alcohol content gives it a lot of flexibility as a cocktail ingredient, but it’s smooth enough to drink straight.
How Do You Use White Whiskey?
White Whiskey can be used the same way any whiskey is used. Try it instead of your usual bourbon in an old fashioned or in a manhattan for a unique twist on a classic cocktail, or try something a little different, like one of our favorites: the Re-Animator. We have friends who use it as an ingredient to add a flavorful kick to their barbecue sauce. The possibilities are endless!
